US elections, Europe between opportunities and threats

Nov 16 2024

American voters have widely elected Donald Trump as the 47th President of the USA. Trump won 312 electoral votes against 226 for Kamala Harris. He also led the popular vote with 50.3% against 48.1% for his rival.

Donald Trump’s election could present a mix of challenges and opportunities for Europe:

Hope for peace in the Russian-Ukrainian and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts
As Trump may adopt a more isolationist foreign policy than previous Democrat administrations, this could put an end to these conflicts. However, a large part of the costs of the war in Ukraine are likely to fall on the EU.

A welcome stop to the spread of the woke ideology

Obligation for the EU members to cooperate to defend our economy
The European economy has always been jeopardized by American Administrations. Biden, with the massive subsidies of the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act), has recently given a boost to investment and production in the USA with bad consequences for our trade.
Only a united Europe will be able to fight the future tariff hikes backed by Trump.

Opportunity to strengthen European defense capabilities
Under President Trump, the US could disengage from NATO or demand that EU states contribute more. This could lead to enhanced cooperation among EU members, increased defense spending, and a more autonomous European defense strategy.

On the other hand, the EU-backed climate cause is the big loser in these elections.

Negotiations with the United States are shaping up to be tough, as Donald Trump has the support of all the institutions. The Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court are now under the control of the Republicans.

Trump’s re-election is a historic change and a challenge we are ready to take up.

We stand for a united Europe able to face the future on our own terms. We’re working toward a European defense, a united foreign policy, safe borders, and ambitious climate action.
